More than half a million U.S. children have unacceptably high levels of lead in their systems, health officials say. Based on an April 5 report by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the number of children with lead poisoning has doubled after the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) lowered the threshold for lead poisoning last year from 10 micrograms per deciliter of blood to 5 micrograms. The report states that one in 38 young children have lead poisoning in the United States.
Lead has been banned in household paint since 1978 and from gasoline by the late 1980s, but children still get lead poisoning when they live in old homes that are in a state of disrepair, according to the CDC. Lead poisoning can lead to irreversible organ damage and cause other problems in children including learning and developmental disabilities, CDC states. A year ago, under the older standard, CDC estimated that somewhere between 77,000 and 255,000 children under 5 years of age had high levels of lead. However, under the new standard, an estimated 535,000 young children have lead poisoning, the report states.
These are alarming numbers and a definite cause for concern, said New York personal injury lawyer Kenneth A. Wilhelm. “Young children suffer long-term health problems as a result of lead poisoning. Peeling or chipped paint from walls covered in lead based paint is one of the main causes of lead poisoning in young children.”
Building owners are required to maintain their properties so they do not present lead-related hazards to tenants and occupants, Wilhelm said. “Poor maintenance often causes lead poisoning in New York City’s older apartment buildings. Property owners and managers have a legal responsibility to ensure that their premises are safe for residents and visitors including maintaining a lead-free environment.”
